About Break-the-Fast

Why Break-the-Fast?

Yom Kippur is a time of intense spiritual reflection, a time during which Jews around the world will fast in order to atone for the the past year. Yom Kippur is also a holiday of renewal, an opportunity to take responsibility for bettering ourselves and our community in the coming year.

Over twenty million Americans are going hungry this year. Feeding everyone is a big job, but every can makes a difference.

How to Participate

Our goal this season is to collect 100,000 cans by Yom Kippur to help those who are hungry. To reach that goal, we’ve created Break-the-Fast, a brand new Facebook app that makes this food drive something everyone can join.

Log in to Facebook and sign up to create your own team, join an existing team, or go it alone. Make your pledge, invite your friends, and watch the numbers grow. We’ll even send you a reusable tote bag to make the job a little easier.*

  • If you’re hosting a break-fast this year, collect cans from your guests.
  • Set up a bag at work and let your office know you’ll be collecting non-perishable items.
  • Set up a bag in a good place for your roommates to donate.
  • Bring a bag to that break-fast you’re attending and suggest that your friends participate, too.
